New “Claudia Brundin Center” Medical Clinic at Blue Lake Rancheria in Northwest California
Background
Near the cities of Eureka and Arcata in northwest California, within the original territory of the Native American Wiyot people, lies the Blue Lake Rancheria. This federally-recognized reservation, five miles inland from the Pacific Coast, began in the early 1900s as a refuge for homeless Native Americans and has in recent decades grown to 100 acres that is home to thriving economic enterprises that support hundreds of local jobs, government operations and programs, economic diversification, resilience and sustainability efforts, environmental protection, and a wide array of social services.
The Challenge
Blue Lake Rancheria needed a community health clinic for emergency response and pandemic threat coordination, as well as serving as a tribal hub working with regional and national partners for public health information collection/dissemination, clinical education, and strategic planning. Space was also needed for inventory/storage of PPE and other public health-related supplies. The remote rural location of Blue Lake Rancheria meant that obtaining bids for all trades needed to construct a traditional-build facility on site would be challenging. Additionally, Blue Lake experiences a long rainy season, which meant the foundation would have to be completed under strict time constraints.
The Solution
Mobile Modular proposed a permanent facility comprising nine separate 108’ x 60’ modular units for a total of 6480 square feet. We also designed and installed the foundation. Complete installation of the nine units (once the foundation was laid) took three months. The building features a customized floor plan, hinged roof trusses that allow a higher-pitched roof (avoiding the costly addition of delivering trusses to the site and craning them onto the building), and board and batten exterior siding with a lap siding wainscot.
BLR also wanted to ensure the building would be filled with natural light, so we installed 19 Solatube skylights to provide sunlight throughout the interior.
Another design innovation: an operable (movable) wall allows for flexible use of a multipurpose meeting room as either one large or two smaller rooms.
Unsurpassed Customer Service
These design selections provided an economical yet highly aesthetically-pleasing building that received rave reviews from client Randy Cox, who touted the structure’s “solid feel” and ease in heating the interior. He also said “I have been in construction for 45 years, and th[e] team with Mobile Modular is a class act. John Maloney [project manager] is a true craftsman and gentleman. I worked directly with John from before the sections showed up to final punch list.”
